Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tarot, exactly?

At its simplest, Tarot is a way of bringing our symbolic mind into our conscious awareness using a deck of 78 cards with archetypal pictures on them. While often associated with the occult or magic, the Tarot doesn’t have to be anything of the sort — though it can be if that’s what you’re into!. It can simply be one of many tools you can use to connect with your intuition and better understand yourself. As a reader, I use the Tarot to assist you in tuning into your own inner voice and telling or retelling your story, rather than primarily as a predictive or fortune telling tool.

Do I have to believe in anything for Tarot to work for me?

Not at all! It helps to be open and curious when trying anything new, but there is no belief required. While lots of us who read Tarot are a little woo, the Tarot can provide insights to anyone willing to engage with their symbolic consciousness. We are all storytellers – when we allow ourselves to tune into the stories we’re telling by seeing what is triggered in us when we’re giving certain symbols or meanings, we are empowered to attune to our own needs, desires, or fears. The Tarot is one of many ways to help you do this, no belief system required.

What should I do to prepare for my reading?

As part of your booking process, I’ll ask you a couple of questions to help me understand your query (depending on if you’re booking a live or pre-recorded reading). Beyond that, I recommend being in a quiet environment where we won’t be interrupted during our time together (or when you watch your recording).

It can be nice to have a journal, a favorite comfort object or fidget, or even just a cozy drink to sip on, but none of these things are required. The most important thing to bring to any tarot reading is an open mind and curiosity.

What happens in a Tarot Reading with you?

We’ll take a moment to settle in, and then I’ll ask you if you have a particular topic you’re wanting to chat with the cards about. This subject you’re wanting to ask about, or the specific question you have will be our Query. We’ll use this Query to pull cards and then we’ll examine the imagery of the cards and the traditional meanings to create the story that the cards are telling. From there, we can explore how your own intuition is connecting with the story we see laid out in the images and meanings of the cards. We’ll wrap up with a moment of reflection and time for any questions. If you request it, I’ll email you a picture of your cards in case you want to save a copy. Once our reading is over I reshuffle the deck and will not be able to answer further questions about your cards or their interpretation.

Are you going to predict my future?

Nope! I do not personally believe the future is fixed, nor do I use the Tarot as a fortune telling device. Instead, when we do a reading like Past, Present and Future, we are looking at possible outcomes of current actions, which allow us to adjust or alter our behavior in the present to reach desired outcomes, or help us understand the way we’re thinking about our present that may be affecting the way we think the future will turn out for us. The cards are there to empower you to tell your own story. If the story we see in a future position feels amazing: Great! Your current actions are already leading you to a place you want to go.  If you see a story you don’t like sitting in a future position: no worries! That’s your call to action to check in with what’s going on in your present that makes you feel fearful, stuck, or Some Sort of Way. You always have the power to change your story.

What if I get a scary card like Death or I just feel afraid?

First: it’s completely normal to feel a little anxious or afraid when you’re trying something new, especially in the realm of your own consciousness. Feeling those things doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong — it’s proof of your own nervous system’s desire to protect you.

Second: you are in charge of your reading. I’ll be with you every step of the way, but if at any point an image or meaning is too unsettling or triggering to you, please speak up. I will do my best to set your mind at ease, and if necessary we can cut the reading short and just take some deep breaths together.

Those things said, I believe in the No Bad Cards philosophy: each card has light and dark facets, but none of them are inherently good or bad. Even scary imagery has its place in our psyches, guiding us to fully accepting our human experience.

What if I don’t like what the cards say?

While there are no bad cards in Tarot, there are cards with more difficult messages. We’ve all been there: we’re wanting the cards to be full of sunshine and joy and instead they point us towards old wounds, pain, or feeling trapped. YIKES. But here’s the good news: if you don’t like what the cards say: it’s your story to retell. The way that you connect with the cards gives you clues as to what actions your intuition and own inner voice is suggesting you take. Your feelings about the cards – including dislike or resistance – are just as important as the possible meanings of the cards. This reading is about you, for you: take what you need, leave what you don’t, change what you need to. And always feel free to ask me questions or share your feelings so that we can make the most of our time together.

What if I don’t like you?

It happens — and you don’t have to feel bad about it! Just like finding the right therapist may take a few tries, finding a Reader that meets you where you need in the moment can also take time. I recognize that sometimes personality, vibe, or reading style may not provide what you’re looking for. If we don’t feel like a good fit, I’ll happily to refer you to someone that may be more aligned with your needs.
